Marisa Barbieri, CEO, Competitive Solutions, Inc.

The CEO of CSI, Marisa Barbieri, has over 20 years of healthcare IT technology solutions experience in the consulting industry.  Marisa designed and developed PeerRX in direct response to the loss of a family friend from an overdose.  During the struggle of her family friend, a young 27-year old man, she thought of developing an Uber-like technology to connect him to the help of other addiction survivors – peers.  PeerRX was born 2 years following his death, in his memory – and with the hope of connecting other people who survived with people struggling from addiction.  The app was launched in September 2019 and made the news in November 2019.  Please refer to this link: https://www.recordonline.com/news/20191118/app-facilitates-peer-support-for-drug-addiction .

Marisa’s company also developed an opioid tracking tool together with the New York National Guard and Catholic Charities of Orange Sullivan and Ulster counties in New York -which made national news in December 2019 proving the company’s passion and commitment to helping those suffering with addiction.   Please refer to this link: https://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory/battle-opioid-crisis-track-overdoses-real-time-67893440

According to the federal organization, SAMSHA (Substance Use and Mental Health Services Administration), “Peer recovery support offers a level of acceptance, understanding, and validation not found in many other professional relationships (Mead&McNeil, 2006).  By sharing their own lived experience and practical guidance, peer support workers help people to develop their own goals, create strategies for self-empowerment, and take concrete steps toward building fulfilling, self-determined lives for themselves”.  For the population of persons with substance use disorder (SUD), peer support workers are people who have been successful in helping them transition to care and recovery. New evidence on peer recovery services shows impact on reduced re-hospitalization rates, reduced relapsed rates, decreased emergency service utilization, decrease criminal justice involvement.

Prior to PeerRX, peer recovery support workers (AKA, “Peers”) were called via the telephone from sites such as hospitals and county crisis call centers.  Playing telephone tag while a patient sits in a bed, recovering from an overdose is inefficient and antiquated.  PeerRX introduces efficiencies into a system that was running as best as they could with antiquated technology. Now, there’s no excuse.
